History of Nalanda University
Today, some talk about great universities, but let me tell you about a lotus. About 1500 years ago, the story was different because, at that time, there was a university in India which is today one of the oldest universities in the world.
Nalanda, the word Nalanda, is made up of three words: Na + Alam + Da, which means a gift that has no limit. Truly, as is the name, so is the wealth of knowledge in this university. Here, not only religious texts but also many subjects were taught. Moreover, to provide complete knowledge of every subject, 9 universities were created, which not only have two lakh but also more than 90 lakh books and managed cribs. This university continued to teach the world for 700 years but Nalanda has ruined us many times. Took the beating also.
Ultimately, in an attack in the twelfth century, Bakhtiyar Khilji burned Nalanda. It is believed that its library continued to burn for three months, and the treasure of knowledge that was kept safely was lost in the smoke at a time when Nalanda was rising to many heights. It was part of a Mahavihara, a huge Buddhist monastery, the ruins of which are still visible on this 57-acre site.
According to some records, Nalanda was actually built on a mango orchard, after which this place was further developed in the Gupta period and by the seventh century, it had become a Mahavihar in Bihar. Many great teachers taught here in different places, such as Keep Calm on Wednesday. Who were the students? Chinese travellers. Many people like us used to come here from all over the world. Many people from all over the world, from China to Myanmar to Sri Lanka, used to come to this place to get an education.
In this Mahavihar, Nalanda was reborn as a modern international university. A university like Nalanda is proof that India’s knowledge has been illuminating the world for centuries and seeks the best education.
Nalanda is a major tourist destination in the centre of Bihar. It is a vibrant district with a mix of history and rural charm where people from diverse backgrounds come together as a culture. It is a beautiful blend of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, but Nalanda is known for it. Being the home of ants, Nalanda University is one of the first residential universities in the world, built in the fifth-century common era, so let’s start a day here.
Nalanda University was the world’s first residential international university with 10,000 students. And 1500 teachers in total was 7 miles long and 3 miles wide because in ancient times there was no kilometre; we have calculated it so that you guys can understand immediately: it was the entire area of 10 kilometres long and 5 kilometres wide, now it has been converted Given is 10 in 1 square kilometre but your dues are at 90. There were mainly four gates to enter the university.
International scholars were honest in front of the four gates. An interview test was conducted for all the people coming from India and abroad. Where we have come now is Monash number six. This is how we have come; there used to be 108 Manari. I had a line for 10,000 students to stay and study; you had it, and the other line was for worship and meditation in the Buddha temple; it ran in two lines, so one in the monastery. There were 32 rooms and 32 rooms for lectures. There was a stage; there was a classroom.
There was drinking water in the middle of the class because there is no excuse here, people would have become Vishwa Guru after studying here. This place in itself is like a living story which spans centuries, and the runes that you can see here are a UNESCO World Heritage Site; as I walk here, I feel as if I am going back in time 500 years ago, even before the University of Oxford was established, the Nalanda University of India had 9 million books. It attracted 10000 students from all over.
You can see that this is a stupa. Sari Putra, Gautam Buddha’s Sari Putra, was the first Desila, and he was born and attained Nirvana here. Randa University was mainly built by three kings simultaneously—the Gupta Dynasty, the Harsha Dynasty, and the Pala Dynasty. However, the library here was on the ninth floor. It was without a floor. It was given three names: Ratna Dadh and, Ratna Sagar Ratna Ranjak. In the 12th century AD, Bakhtiyar Khilji burnt down the library here.
The library here was regularly burnt for six months; it continued to burn for six months. Why it kept burning for six months because, at that time, paper was not invented. There was a copper sheet, and there were copper sheets inside it; because of the copper, slowly, six months passed, and we saw the existence of Nalanda University.
But knowing its dark history, we never thought that Nalanda University could come back to its glory. Thanks to the Government of Bihar, which has contributed significantly to the Nalanda University Development Project. In 2011, the Government of Bihar gifted 455 acres of land to establish a new world-class Nalanda University, so let’s go and take a look. I have come to the New Nalanda University.
