This is very big news: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on 21 March 2024. This arrest is the first time that a sitting Chief Minister has faced such action.
The case relating to excise duty policy: The arrest is a money laundering case related to excise duty policy. High Court Decides: The Delhi High Court, on the first day, refused to grant protection to Mr Kejriwal from any coercive action by the institution.
ED's work: After the court's decision, a team of ED officials reached Kejriwal's house for questioning. AAP's claim: AAP alleged a "larger conspiracy" behind the arrest, especially ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. AAP accused Kejriwal of trying to bow down to the BJP.
Kejriwal's continuity: Atishi, a Delhi Cabinet minister, said Kejriwal would stay as Chief Minister and even run the government from jail if necessary, despite his arrest. AAP has also challenged ED's action in the Supreme Court.
